The University of Queensland

Course details

CRICOS course code: 079390F

Level of study: Undergraduate

Summary

If you are a high achieving student with a keen interest in science then the Bachelor of Advanced Science (Honours) will allow you to challenge and extend yourself.

This elite four year program will provide the foundation for a research career with continuous interaction with researchers from your first year of study.

You will visit research laboratories, conduct a research project in your final year and be mentored by academics. You will interact with other high achieving students and be exposed to cutting edge technologies and discoveries to put you at the forefront of the next generation of scientists.

The program differs from the Bachelor of Science by offering courses at an advanced level and an Honours year incorporated as a standard part of your program schedule rather than as an additional component dependent on eligibility.

Program structure

The courses offered in the Bachelor of Advanced Science (Honours) are set out in the course list. Each course is allocated a certain number of units (#). A standard full-time study load is 8 units per semester.

The Program Rules explain what is required to complete the Bachelor of Advanced Science (Honours). These requirements include the total number of units you need to complete in order to graduate.

Physics

Embracing the study of the most basic natural laws, physics explains how and why things work on scales ranging from the sub-nuclear, through the everyday, and on to the entire cosmos. As a physicist you will explore and identify basic principles governing the structure and behaviour of matter, the generation and transfer of energy, and the interaction of matter and energy.

You may choose to use these principles in theoretical or experimental studies on topics such as the nature of time and the origin of the Universe; or alternatively you may apply your physics knowledge to practical areas, developing advanced materials, electronic and optical devices, and equipment for a wide range of fields such as medicine, mining, astronomy and geophysics.

As a physicist, you have career opportunities in new interdisciplinary areas such as information technology, nanotechnology, quantum technology and biophotonics. In other newly developing areas in the biosciences, an understanding of basic physical principles is one of the keys to advancing knowledge.
