Summary

The Senior Years at St Andrew’s is based upon those values that are at the heart of our mission.

Through life giving relationships, members of St Andrew’s Catholic College Community journey together with Christ: to celebrate the uniqueness of each individual; to experience quality teaching and learning; and to foster community participation. The curriculum of the Senior School is based upon intellectual and academic rigor independent of the chosen pathway selected by the student. The Senior Years curriculum is inclusive, holistic and relevant and develops a love of lifelong learning. The curriculum has a strong Catholic identity and gives witness to Christian values; is open and accessible to all who seek its values; is inclusive; staffed by qualified, competent and compassionate people who give witness to gospel values and builds upon community linkages established within junior and middle schooling phases.

Underpinning the Senior Years curriculum is the curriculum of life. The core business of curriculum development is the promotion of social and emotional wellbeing. The effectiveness of schooling is a great deal more than maximising academic achievement but rather developing skills such as the students becoming visible learners who know how to learn, why they learn and where next their learning will take them; to provide the student with personal development, self-esteem and GRIT. The goal of Senior Years is to provide a well-rounded and confident individual.

At the core of the Senior Years pedagogical philosophy is a holistic approach towards educating each student within its care. The pillars of education clearly illustrate that there is a need to educate the student beyond the confines of a traditional classroom; rather lifelong learning and an awareness of self are the tools educators now need to grasp to provide the most appropriate learning environments for students. Inherent within this philosophy is a strong belief in the importance of individuality encompassing Catholicity and fostering preparedness for future success of the students. Senior Schooling offerings do not present only knowledge to be attained, but also values to be acquired and truths to be discovered.

As a Catholic College, it is vital for students to know and understand the role religion plays in their own lives and society. The Senior Years Religious Education program provides a breadth of learning experiences and a depth in understanding religious belief and tradition within society.

The Year 10 program offers students the chance to choose between the Applied ATAR subject of Religion and Ethics or Certificate III in Christian Ministry and Theology. This allows students to start accumulating QCE points during their Religion studies in Year 10. They will then continue this course into Year 11.

In Year 11 and 12, students may then, instead, elect to study the General ATAR subject of Study of Religion.
